This is a lovely antique postcard from 1910 wishing a lucky recipient a Happy Birthday. And, it's purple! My favorite color ;-) I've offered three different compositions of the image: the original, without the greeting, and just the illustration, also without the greeting.

The anchor in the illustration is very interesting. I did a little research and found that the anchor symbolizes both hope and stability. It's used in Christianity to symbolize a hope in Christ and in the secular world to symbolize both hope and stability. I often see the anchor on antique ephemera, especially postcard greetings, and I think it was used as a symbol for hope for the future as is used in birthday greetings. I'll never look at anchors the same way again! Perhaps this will give you some inspiration when using this image.

A reader of this blog brought to my attention that the Audubon images that I recently posted might still be copyrighted by the Audubon society. After doing a little research, I found that that is indeed true. As a result, I've taken down these images. I sincerely apologize for having posted these images without knowing about the existing copyrights.

I make it my endeavor to stay informed on copyright laws, and I only post images on this site that were published before January 1923. When I obtain antique ephemera, I always make sure there is a visible date. Without a date, I won't make it available.

I once tried to wear an actual pair of antique women's shoe, and it was impossible! The shoes were incredibly narrow, and they were from the turn of the century. I'd give anything to wear a pair of boots like these, but I think that's a far off dream. I guess feet just came smaller back then ;-)

Do you love creating ATC's? I do. A friend of mine got me into them, and she's a real artist. They're little works of art and lots of fun to decorate.

So, here's a real treat for you! I've created a collage sheet of ATC backgrounds using antique, Victorian wallpaper samples. Each of the 6 images prints at 2.5 x 3.5 inches. I hope you have lots of fun using these. I recently bought a HUGE antique wallpaper book, and I'm in the process of scanning the pages. Phew! But, it's great fun :-)

I also came across a wonderful blog, Shadowhouse Creations, and what a find! Have you discovered it yet? If not, go check it out. The blog's author, Jerry Jones, is a talented graphic artist, as well as very generous with his free textures. I love them! I used several of his textures in creating this collage sheet.

Aren't these head dresses spectacular?! It's difficult to image what women had to go through in order to get dressed and ready for the day. The layers of clothes, the elaborate fashions, and the strict code of modesty and decency made the morning ritual a production in itself. These hats, or head dresses, were incredibly beautiful and certainly topped off the gorgeous dresses worn at that time.

Here's another antique advertisement example similar to yesterday's image. I've experimented a little with this one by coloring in certain areas in my photo editing software. I've done this before with other black and white illustrations, but I really didn't like how they came out. However, this image is just perfect for color! And, so is this one. I think it's the tone of the image that helps the color look so pretty.

This is an idea that helps give new life to old, black and white images and illustrations. I've given you the original, as well as my version, so you can use whatever colors you want. But, the original is beautiful by itself too.

This kitty looks more like a wild cat than our beloved pets, but it's still an adorable image. The Victorian's were obsessed with natural history and nature, and this definitely shows in their art, especially when it comes to the cat.

Here is a page from an antique poetry journal that was handwritten in 1832. It's very difficult to read because the caligraphy is very flowery; however, what's important is that the writing is pretty ;-) Some of the poetry in this antique journal is original and a few are copies of well-known poems. I'm not sure which type of poem is this particular entry.

Antique women's fashion is so interesting and quite alarming at times. I'm in the process of sewing a civil war era tea dress for a yearly competition in my town, and my education has been lots of fun. I love to sew, but I've never taken on such a project. As well as learning new sewing techniques, I've gained a better appreciation of what women had to go through wearing the vast amounts of fabric and the dreaded corset. The clothes were incredibly beautiful, but not a joy to wear most of the time.

Today's clip art is 1915 hat fashion and would be much easier and more fun to wear than a corset ;-) I've provided three different files: first, a .png file with drop shadow; second, a .png file, and last, a .jpg file.

All of the images I've posted on both clip art blogs so far this week have needed extensive first aid from my photo editing software. These large die cuts, or scrap cards, that have come in pairs all faced one another on opposite pages. The years of friction and pressure took a toll on the surfaces, but even with a bit of damage still visible, they're beautiful and certainly deserve a second life.

These large, antique die cuts, or scrap cards, are so pretty and a real treasure that I found in a Victorian scrapbook. Rescuing them hasn't been easy though. The cards faced one another on opposite pages, so there are signs of wear and cracking on the raised areas. It has taken me quite a while to fix these up, but the images are so worth the effort.
